My Approach As well as offering an emotionally supportive atmosphere, I work from a Psychodynamic and Psychoanalytic perspective as this can be helpful in thinking about problems and distress in the present that can sometimes be related to earlier experiences or relationships in our lives.  Understanding this can help you gain fresh insight into present difficulties or relationship patterns.  A professional and insightful counselling relationship may over a period of time help you to increase in self awareness, and provide you with an environment that may help to facilitate change.   Psychodynamic Counsellors and Psychotherapists practice a 'talking therapy' and gently encourage you to explore issues more deeply without feeling criticised or judged.  Therapy is an opportunity to think about how you think about and respond to life's events, and an opportunity to explore options and different ways of coping.  The experience of sharing your thoughts and feelings with another individual can relieve your feelings that you are entirely alone with your problem.  I may sometimes additionally work with CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), if I feel this may be helpful for you. Research supports the view that the level of trust and empathy between the client and counsellor is more important than the type of therapy.  It is therefore important to find a counsellor that you feel comfortable with.  On this basis I offer an introductory consultation, to enable us to meet and talk about what would be most suitable for you. I usually work with clients on an open ended basis as in my experience this is more beneficial.  Alternatively, I can also offer time limited counselling focusing on one specific problem - this is generally for about 12 sessions.  When it is agreed what would be most helpful to you, we can arrange a regular day and time each week to meet, as the counselling process needs a commitment to weekly sessions.
